Saying hello:

ohayō - good morning (informal)
ohayō gozaimasu - good morning (more formal)
konnichiwa - good day
konbanwa - good afternoon
moshi moshi - hello (telephone greeting)

Saying goodbye:

sayōnara - goodbye
mata ashita - see you tomorrow
ja mata ne - see you (casual)
bai bai - bye bye (Informal)
oyasumi nasai - goodnight

Introductions:

hajimemashite - how do you do?
dōzo yoroshiku - pleased to meet you

General:

hai - yes
iie - no
sumimasen - sorry/excuse me
arigatō - thank you
dōmo arigatō - thank you (more formal)
dōmo arigatō gozaimasu; - thank you very much (uber formal)
dōmo - thanks (informal)

Very important!:

desu - am, is, are
ka - roughly "?", this turns a statement into a question

Conversation 1

Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley Soryu meet for the first time with a sinister intent to trade drugs

Shinji: Hajimemashite. Ikari Shinji desu. Dōzo yoroshiku.
Asuka: Hajimemashite. Asuka Langley Soryu desu. Dōzo yoroshiku.
Shinji passes Asuka a dodgy looking package.
Asuka: Gosen-en desu ka?
Shinji: Hai.
Asuka passes Shinji 5000 yen.
Shinji: Arigatō, sayōnara.
Asuka: Oyasumi nasai.

Notes:

gosen-en - a 5000 yen note

Conversation 2

A pantie stealing hermit has used the internet to meet up with a young schoolgirl Chiyo-chan. Lets see how it goes.

Hermit: Sumimasen, Chiyo-chan desu ka?
Cute girl: Iie.
Hermit: Sumimasen, Chiyo-chan desu ka?
Cute girl 2: Iie. Gomen.
Hermit: Chiyo-chan desu ka???
Chiyo-chan: Ano....ano....
Chiyo-chan runs away.
Mina-san: BAKA!

Notes:

gomen - an informal word for declining, or sorry, short for gomennasai
Ano and Ē to - equivalent of "err" or "umm" in English.
Mina-san - everybody
baka - fool/stupid
